Is it normal/appropriate for a boss to comment on how one should wear their hair? My boss told me on two separate occasions that I should cut my hair or wear it up because I would look more professional. I have slightly longer than shoulder length hair, so after the second comment I told him that I refuse to cut my hair short to look more like a man and that I am disappointed that the female executives at the company all have short hair. I think women should embrace their femininity and not hide it. I dress professionally in suits and wear knee length skirts with tights, I consider my look classy and professional and do not wish to cut my hair.

    • I like that you mention embracing your femininity and not conforming to archaic standards!

    • If you dress professionally to a customer meeting and at work, I don’t see any issues with wearing your hair down. Maybe he should learn to not be distracted by someone’s hair and put more value into the quality of their work.

    • No! It is not appropriate for your boss to tell you to cut your hair! If you conduct yourself professionally, you should be able to wear your hair down.
